Approvals

Earn autonomy

Let actions that people always approve run on their own, with evidence, a shadow period and sampling.

About 5 minutes

Transcript (30 seconds)

Autonomy lets routine actions run on their own.

After two hundred decisions, it suggests a range.

Shadow mode checks the policy against real decisions.

Promote it, and five percent are still sampled for review.

Roll back in one click if anything changes.

Before you start

Steps

  1. Read the suggestions

Autonomy groups past requests by action and amount range. When a range has 200 or more decisions and a 97% lower bound on approval, it suggests auto-approval.

  2. Run in shadow

Press Shadow. For a while, requests still go to people, and we record whether the policy would have agreed.

  3. Promote

When shadow agrees, press Promote. It publishes a policy version with an auto-approve rule for that range, like this one.

    - id: autonomy-payment-refund-0-50
      match: { action: payment.refund, when: "args.amount > 0.0 && args.amount <= 50.0" }
      effect: auto_approve
  4. Review samples

5% of auto-approved requests go to Reviews. A reviewer marks each right or wrong.

  5. Roll back

Revert removes the rule in one step if something changes.

Use cases

Fewer clicks for support

The situation
Approvers approve almost every small refund.
What to do
Shadow the suggested range for two weeks, then promote.
What happens
Those refunds run on their own and approvers see fewer cards.

Catch drift

The situation
A sampled auto-approval was wrong.
What to do
Mark it wrong in Reviews and revert the rule.
What happens
The range goes back to people at once, with a record of why.

What you will see

Promoted ranges approve by policy, the monthly report counts the hours saved, and sampling keeps a person in the loop.

It worked when

Example output: A suggestion

payment.refund, amount over 0 up to 50
412 decisions, 99.3% approved, lower bound 0.978
Suggested: approve by policy

If something goes wrong

No suggestions appear
A range needs 200 decisions and a 97% lower bound. Ranges come from the cut points in your policy's conditions.
Promote is not offered
Shadow must agree first. Disagreements are listed so you can see why.
Too many samples
The sample rate is 5% of auto-approved requests; it cannot be turned off, by design.
